From April the 13th to October the 7th, the Musée Galliera hors les murs presents the Spring-Summer 2012 collection of Comme des Garçons at the Docks, Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris. Rei Kawakubo, the stylist of the japanese house of fashion has invented a mise-en-scene that does great justice to her very up-to-date designs, called White Drama.

It is like everything is airborne in giant bubbles where the reflections of the neon lights meet the white shadows of the mannequins. In a preserved atmosphere, you are free to walk around and scrutinize the unique dresses, coats, masks and lines. They look like ancient sculptures with the most realistic pleats in the whole History of Art.

The exhibition is full of shapes, sensations and fabrics plays. There are bows, pleats, holes, shadows, lights, curves, profusion, economy, prisons, fuzziness, bubbles and hidden things. Clothes are shown like some cosy shelters where the mannequins would have found refuge.

White becomes suddenly multicoloured. If everything seems to be made of the same white, nothing is the same and your eyes will lost sight with delight in delicate and tiny little details imagined by Rei Kawakubo. Lace, crochet, silks, flowers hand-woven or sculpted and viscose are just so many reasons to volume, growth and inspiration. The feeling of sctructures is made stronger by the sensation of the preservation of all the clothes, created by the giant bubbles where air is constantly renewed.

Rei Kawaku has thunk about all the high moments in life from birth to death and beyond in her creations. Flowers are blooming, withering, fabrics are shiny, then canceling out but still filling. She gave life in the heart of the bubbles, making these lifeless mannequins appear as sleepy creatures waiting for their awakening. This is a drama that takes place under our eyes, our everyday drama, sublimated by the art at work of the fashion designer of Comme des Garçons.
